Introducing Our dear and humble 

Victoria Twyman 

{ Methodical Harlot, Voice of Reason }

I am a wife of nearly 31 years, a mother to 5 grown children and grandmother to 2 wonderful teenage grandsons.  I have been retired for about 5 years and am so enjoying the freedom to pursue my artistic dreams. I have, up to this point, been a self-taught jewelry artist - learning from tons of reading and watching videos;however, I have just started a metalsmith class and am looking forward to learning all of the tricks of the trade and improving on my skills.  I create one-of-a-kind jewelry and home decor pieces using vintage and found objects.  I am also now creating jewelry from metal - mostly copper and brass - and I think I have found my passion!!

Coffee Talk With Viki ~

1.  What is your earliest memory of knowing  you had an itch for design?
 I grew up on a small farm and it seems like my brothers and I were always outside finding really cool stuff to make things out of.  I remember taking the plastic strawberry baskets and weaving leaves and sticks through them.  I would then add a piece of fabric around the top and tie it into a bow.  I was so proud of those little baskets!!


2.  Food/drink  nourishment of choice when in design mode?
Chocolate and Pepsi!!!   I know, how bad can you get, right???  I am trying to give up the Pepsi, but you will NEVER take my chocolate away from me!!!!

3. Favorite designers? Fashion, interiors, jewelry, Art, Architecture? a few will do...
This is a hard one for me because I have never been influenced by one style.  I just love art and creative thinking - anything outside of the box.  If I was to pick a fashion designer it would have to be Vera Wang because her clothing has such wonderful asymmetrical lines.  As for a jewelry designer - 

I want to grow up to be like Troy Hawkins!  

He is my hero.  

4. What is your mantra/motto?

To LOVE what I am doing.  

To feel total joy and fulfillment from it.  


5. How you you define a Burlap Harlot? What makes you one?
A Burlap Harlot is non-judgmental, open to new and unique ideas and people.  Willing to accept everyone for who they are - their uniqueness - their individuality.  

Someone with an open mind and heart.   

6. As a designer what moves you? Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration from everything around me.  I really LOVE old things, things with character and a story to tell.  I think I'm pretty good at listening to that story and absorbing inspiration from it.  I also find inspiration from my metal. It may sound weird, but a lot of times I will pick up a piece of metal and have no idea what I am going to do with it and I just hold it and the ideas start to form and I start working with that piece of metal until I'm happy with the result.

After graduating from F.I.D.M. (The fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) for interior design in Los Angeles, 

My husband and I ventured North in 2000 

to smell fresh air and raise 

our children in the country sunshine.

 I consider myself to be an aesthetic alchemist: creator of visually stimulating, beautiful space and things. I feel design and being creative is my dharma, I get lost in space and time, nothing else seems to matter.

1. What is your earliest memory of knowing you had an itch for design?

Well, my mom says I was designing in the womb. My earliest memory of a love for design had to have been my fascination with creating the houses for my Barbie’s. I didn’t have the dream house, So I had to make do with creating walls from L.P.s, folding up towels for beds and adorning them with different pillow cases for bed spreads. I loved to dress them too, but never really liked to actually ‘play’. The fun was in the creating. I also changed my room around all the time growing up.

 2. Food/drink nourishment of choice when in design mode?

 Yerba Mate’ definitely gets creative juices flowing in the A.M. Afternoons and evenings- Red wine... If I did not have to feed my family, I could definitely survive on finger foods. 

3. Favorite designers? Fashion, interiors, jewelry, Art, Architecture? a few will do...

I have always loved Frank Lloyd Wrights’ organic interiors and architecture. I admire his ability to bring the outside in, his love of nature, clean lines and simplicity. He was a wild man, 

a true genius before his time. William Morris’ Textiles are timeless. 

4. What is your mantra/motto?

Hummm, So many…

5. How do you define a Burlap Harlot? What makes you one?

A Burlap Harlot beats to her own drum, She makes her own rules, She prefers the charm of all things old, rusty and chippy with a story to tell, things with a soul as opposed to the high sheen and luster of polished brand new Cherry wood or meaningless junk made in China.

6. What inspires you?

I am inspired by others, nature, music, textiles, color, wabi ~ sabi (the Japanese art of imperfection) My husband and kiddos daily ~ they 'keep me keepin on'. 

Life itself is an ongoing creative process. 

These days I work as a freelance designer out of my home studio. I have been in a chapter of my life called:

'Watching the babes and vegetables grow'

{Mystical Harlot, Grounding Ethereal Muse}

I was born in Mt. Shasta, raised in Northern California and currently live in Igo. I attended the Academy of Art College in San Francisco then returned to the North State area where my realization for creating jewelry was inspired. Art has always been a healing entity for me and I put forth that energy in my work. I create a line of "One of a Kind" and Limited Edition jewelry. I translate ancient and other worldly influences and images into unique, elegant contemporary creations. My jewelry is designed to touch all with a captivating mysticism. My intention is to provide a piece of art to wear that represents an extension of one’s self. The time that I spend on my work is always limited. My interests in life are my art work, my family and raising my 4 dogs.

1. What is your earliest memory of knowing  you had an itch for design?

When I was 26 my friend, Erika and I were at Shasta Lake hanging out on the shore line taking in the Sunshine and visiting. She had brought with her some beading supplies and we started to "create". I remember how it brought such calm to me and how at that moment I had realized that I needed to get back in touch with my creative side.


2.  Food/drink  nourishment of choice when in design mode?

It depends entirely on the time of day. If it is in the morning/early afternoon, I will drink Herbal Tea. If it is in the late afternoon or evening I will be drinking Red Wine. Always Red. Red till I am dead baby. Red till I am dead. ;)


3. Favorite designers? Fashion, interiors, jewelry, Art, Architecture? a few will do...

Ralph Lauren. The late great Alexander Mcqueen. Donna Karen Love her work. I would have to say that Mr. Lauren is my top favorite. He has the ability to inspire me with just a swatch of fabric!


4. What is your mantra/motto?

Being intimately connected with every step in the creative process. Art, to me, has to be the end result of ones true passionate pursuit. To create something that is an extension of ones soul. I do tend to lean towards creating pieces inspired from an archeological object or a period in time.


5. How you you define a Burlap Harlot? What makes you one?

 ~ A free spirit, Opting to pop that cork

 on that lovely 2005 Mouvedre early 

in the day just to savor a moment of pure 

bliss. It's smiling, when you know someone 

is wrong,and saying "I never did mind 

about the little things."

6. As a designer what moves you? Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration from all kinds of venues. Landscapes, movies, magazines and most importantly, History. The movies "Troy" and "300" were packed with all kinds of creative ideas!

 7. How would you describe your creative process?

Visual stimulation comes in via: Landscapes, movies etc. Then, usually between 3:00-6:00 a.m. it hits me! My mind will pull together a piece from stored ideas and images. This is truly the initial  "raw" creative moment for me.

1. What is your earliest memory of knowing  you had an itch for design?

Being the youngest of 6, raised by a single mom who worked long days during the summer months, I would sometimes hop on my bike & ride all around the South Bay.

I was always intrigued by  neighborhood homes & would ride for hours through various communities such as Japan town or near the university admiring  craftsman-style bungalows, victorians, ranch-style, or English tudors. I remember loving the way the light played on these houses, while riding home as the sun set, to get home before dark. I would imagine interiors & draw constantly during these long summer days as a kid.

2.  Food/drink nourishment of choice when in design mode?

Coffee.  Adding cream makes it a meal.

3. Favorite designers? Fashion, interiors, jewelry, Art, Architecture? a few will do... 

Ralph Lauren for his classic clothing & interiors.  

Alphonse Mucha for his gorgeous 

Art Nouveau paintings.  

Nancy Meyers for her beautiful set designs.

 Have nothing in your house that you 

do not know to be useful 

or believe to be beautiful.

5. How you you define a Burlap Harlot? 

  A Burlap Harlot has taste... But not always the money.  

Not to be confused with cheap.  

Burlap is an inexpensive textile. 

 But given enough pizazz, & a little ingenuity, 

Burlap can look like a million bucks.  

That's what a Burlap Harlot does. 

She creates beauty from discarded or unloved objects.  

Salvaging, restoring, altering... 

Breathing a new life into abandoned goods & creating beauty for all to enjoy!

6. As a designer what moves you? Where do you find inspiration?

 Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. My husband's warmth. 

My childrens' chatter & laughter.  

Fresh coffee. Good wine. Sunday dinner.

I find inspiration in pretty much everything; 

Classic movies, music, farmers markets, flea markets, 

thrift shops, coffee shops, cafes, 

restaurants, art, images, & nature.  

(I do love certain movies for their set designs)...

This afternoon Monica, Ursula and Viki met at the Antique Cottage and had a great (and hot) time picking through the outdoor area for bistro tables and chairs for our Indoor Cafe!  We met up with Jae at the fairgrounds and unloaded everything.
 It was hot and sweaty work, but somebody had to do it!!!

I was going to take pictures, but as usual, I forgot.  Hopefully I will remember tomorrow during set up.  Would be great to see the before and after.  

The cafe area is going to be just darling!  A fun place to sit and eat or rest the feet.   We have amazing plans for the front entrance - It will be FABULOUS!!

Ok, off to load up my trailer and back home for some pizza and then off to bed early.  Tomorrow will be a very looooooooooooooong day.

So excited for Saturday to get here - like a little kid at Christmas.

Ok, picture top hats and petticoats hanging overhead!!!!  Our resident Harlot dressed to the 9's in an outlandish orange gown with huge clusters of flowers and a hat to match!!  Tons of flowers made from newspaper and music note paper - trees and rosemary - Oh my!!!!

The 4 harlots had a fantastic time this morning searching through a huge room of amazing costumes by Rita Simpson of Serendipity, looking for that perfect look for The Burlap Harlot Show.  We all came away with the most amazing outfits and hats!!!   Here's a picture of my hat!

Can you believe it????  Less than 2 weeks until The Burlap Harlot Show!!!

The 4 Harlots; Monica, Viki, Jae, and Ursula are busy, busy, busy working to bring Shasta County an amazing, fun, and lively show.

There will be over 50 vendors selling their wares and delicious goodies!  Beer, wine, great food (including a vegetarian dish), yummy pie.............my mouth is watering already!

This show is all about having a good time!  We have a fantastic eclectic group of artisans and vendors selling jewelry, art,  vintage and up-cycled "stuff" - from clothing, home decor to furniture!!

It's a great time to start shopping for those unique, one-of-a-kind Christmas gifts. 

You will have fabulous music to stroll by!!!

It was such a beautiful day...

 Every once in awhile there are days where everything falls into place so beautifully.  A day filled with smiles, laughter, (and hugs) with good friends, family, and lovely people in our community.
The Burlap Harlot Show was such a day and every one of our vendors and those who attended did such a wonderful job of making this artisan fair amazing!  So, here's a big shout out to ALL OF YOU who made this happen... you definitely made this event such a gorgeous, memorable day...

Giving Back to Our Community...

The Burlap Harlots are very happy to announce we're collaborating with

Shasta Regional Community Foundation in starting a 'Youth Arts Fund'!  By attending our first annual show, your $3 general admission will support kids pursuing a career in the arts.  It is our goal to give back to our community by strengthening and supporting local artists & crafters, businesses, and restaurants.  So, come out to the show and have a great time... and help a north state kid pursue their dream!
